The De-Creating of Human Identity

The De-Creating of Human Identity

Read Time 2 minutes

Some are calling this moment the Hour of Fragmentation, the unmaking of all things.”1.

There is no doubt that this year has seen the upheaval on a revolutionary level. It is touching every area of life. It is exhausting and unsettling to live in. It is also messy, very messy.

When we deconstruct everything, there is nothing but chaos and chaos leads to cruelty. There is no morality, no boundaries, we can do anything we want and that inevitably leads to disorder and cruelty.

We are seeing we can’t live on the basis of a de-creating, de-constructionist view. It’s impossible.

IDENTITY IS A MATTER OF WHAT WE SERVE AND WORSHIP

The Bible says that our identity is a matter of theology – its not a matter of psychological theories, it is a matter of what we serve and worship.

Psalm 8 says the honor and glory of God and honor and glory of humanity is bound up together. The more you see the greatness of God, the more you see the greatness of the people he made.

“What are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?

Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor.”

Psalm 8:4

Listen carefully to that last line. “Yet you made them only a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.”

We are just short of divinity. Yet we are created in the image of God. We have got things only God has. Like God, we have a rational aspect, therefore we hunger for knowledge. Animals don’t. We have a personal aspect and eternal aspect therefore we hunger for love and to last forever. We have a creative aspect, and so we pursue beauty.

Our human dignity is tied to God.

When we fragment our humanness, we dismantle the image of God that is entertwined in our humanity.

FORMING OF IDENTITY IS ON THE THOUGHTS GOD THINKS ABOUT US

Psalm 8 goes on and states we are below divinity but higher than all other created.

And yet here in this Psalm is a vital part of what forms our identity. We need to know that someone sees us as so precious, that they think about us, that they are mindful of us.

“What are mere mortals that you should think about them..” (8:4) God thinks about us.

Have you ever seen kids on swings in a park yelling out, “Dad look at me!! Look at me Dad!”? We have a need to be noticed. We need to know that we fill people’s minds. There is nothing worse than to walk away and have no body miss you.

Psalm 8 says God is mindful of us. We dominate the mind of God!!! The ultimate mind of the universe is mindful of us and until we know that, we will not treat ourselves as we deserve. Each one of us is a work of art. In the beginning God made order from chaos (Genesis 1:1), and so everything about us has intention, order, purpose.

The honor and glory of our humanity is bound up together with the honor and glory of God. The more majestic God is in our mind, the more royal he is in our lives, the more we will understand our own glory and honor. The more we see the greatness of God, the more we see the greatness of the people He has made.

From Genesis to Revelation we hear the identity statement of our Maker. We are His masterpiece of art. We carry an order, wholeness, dignity and authority.

In a world de-creating and unmaking, He makes all things new.
